What began as a lighthearted comment on TikTok has spiraled into an online feud between students of the University of The Gambia (UTG) and the American International University West Africa (AIUWA).
According to Binta Jammeh, a student at UTG, the dispute ignited after a TikTok user joked, “Life is hard, but at least I don’t have to go to Faraba,” referring to the location of UTG’s main campus in Kombo East.
The comment quickly went viral, prompting others to chime in with their preferences for institutions such as MDI, USET, and Gambia College over UTG.
The conversation took a sharper turn when AIUWA was dragged into the mix. In response, a UTG student fired back, “Na Faraba I talk, wetin concern AIUWA?” — a comment that sparked a wave of back-and-forth jabs between students from both universities.
What started as playful banter has since morphed into a heated exchange, with students trading not just school comparisons, but insults as well.
“It’s disheartening to see this kind of division,” Binta remarked. “Especially when both UTG and AIUWA share lecturers and play vital roles in shaping the future of education in The Gambia.”
As the digital dust continues to settle, many are calling for cooler heads to prevail, and for students to focus on unity, not rivalry.
