A critical care physician, Dr Sunkaru Touray was administered the vaccine at the Carlsbad Medical Centre and Artesia General Hospital in the state of New Mexico.

He wrote on Twitter: "Honored to be the first recipient of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID19 Vaccine at my hospital. Vaccines are an integral part of our fight to control this pandemic".

He added: "I want to thank all involved, but especially scientists and study volunteers involved in this unprecedented achievement."

One of his followers commented: "With all the speculated risks surrounding this said vaccine what convinced you to take it?"

According to his hospital, where he led the COVID-19 team, Dr Sunkaru is their first physician who received the vaccine, followed by four other physicians.
