Welcome to the Smiling Coast: Hotels prepare for the start of the tourist season

The country's tourism sector is gearing up for yet another winder season which brings an annual influx of tourists.

And this year promises to be busier than last year with tourism officials expecting an increase in the number of arrivals, especially from the Netherlands.

Most of the hotels that closed in June for repairs are opening their doors early next month when the first tourist flight is expected to arrive at the Banjul International Airport.

Kombo Beach Hotel, which is the most famous hotel in the Kotu Strand, has undertaken major repairs.

In a Facebook post, they revealed: "During the summer months, all our beach and pool beds are being checked, repaired, sandpapered and painted. With well over 500 beds, that is not an easy job."

The hotel headed by one of the most respected managers in the tourism sector, Marc Van Maldegem, also revealed that that they completely replaced their entire walk in freezers.

"These freezers were very old: the insulation was no longer as it should be plus the compressors were consuming a lot of electricity. We are building a total of 5 new cold rooms being 3 freezer rooms, 1 multipurpose (being freezer and fridge) and one cold room."

University of The Gambia lecturer, Daouda Niang, was very impressed with Kombo Beach Hotel. He wrote on Facebook: "Great investment and very much in line with the principles of sustainable tourism. Well done Kombo Beach Hotel and I hope the hospitality industry in the Gambia will continue to grow in an energy efficient way.

Meanwhile, the Gambia Tourism Board has been busy promoting their Facebook page. They succeeded in garnering more than 30,000 likes in the past few weeks.
