Why do Fulas dominate in national and regional examinations?

To no one’s surprise, majority of the top students in this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) are Fulas.

Over the past decade, they have been outshining other ethnicities in both national and regional examinations.

Abdourahman Bah and Muhammed Boye Jallow of Nusrat Senior Secondary School came first and second respectively in the just released WASSCE results.

Muhammed bagged A1 in all his subjects except English Language. Like many other Fula youngsters, his parents have never sat on a classroom desk.  They can’t even construct a simple sentence in English.

How do they do it?

According to Ousman Sowe of Fulbeh Africa, in many Fula families children are always encouraged to reach for the stars.

He said: “Fulas are exposed to certain things that immensely contribute to their development from an early age. This includes business, Quranic education and even animal herding. All these help in enhancing their understanding of things from an early age.”

However, Ousman added: “To me Fulas are not different from any other ethnic group.”
