A promotional flyer circulating on social media announces an upcoming event at Jambanjelly Lower Basic School featuring controversial singer Star Girl, alongside DJ Remi and DJ Amz. The event is scheduled for Saturday, December 12, starting at 3 p.m.
It remains uncertain whether the school authorities have cancelled or will proceed with the event, following the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education’s (MoBSE) recent ban on Star Girl and other musicians with explicit content from performing in schools.
In a press release, MoBSE reminded the public, school administrators, and education stakeholders that artists whose songs contain vulgar, indecent, or immoral content are strictly prohibited from performing in schools.
The ministry noted that despite earlier warnings, some schools continued to invite such entertainers to perform during school-organised events.
“This conduct directly violates the fundamental principles and core values the education system seeks to promote,” the statement added, emphasising that schools must remain spaces of learning and moral development.
MoBSE’s decision has been widely welcomed by many Gambians, who believe it will help restore discipline and “sanity” within the country’s music scene.
