Sulayman Sanneh, a mason from Lamin Babylon, has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment at Mile 2 Central Prison after being found guilty of indecent assault on a woman whose identity has been withheld.
Delivering judgment at the Brikama Magistrates’ Court, Magistrate Anna Mendy also ordered Sanneh to pay D100,000 as compensation to the victim. In default of payment, he will serve an additional two months in prison.
According to court records, the incident occurred on 22 December 2024, when Sanneh attacked the complainant, forcibly removed her clothes, and attempted to rape her. The woman resisted and fought back, preventing penetration. The court heard that Sanneh later ejaculated on the victim before releasing her.
During the trial, the prosecution called two witnesses and tendered the accused’s voluntary and cautionary statements as exhibits. Sanneh did not call any witnesses nor present any exhibits in his defence.
In her ruling, Magistrate Mendy stated that the prosecution had discharged its legal burden to the standard required under Section 144 of the Evidence Act, 1994. She subsequently convicted Sulayman Sanneh as charged.
