A foundation established by international footballer, Alieu Darboe has unveiled plans to support grassroots football clubs in The Gambia.
In an interview with What’s On-Gambia, the famous footballer said: “There is a container on its way to the country loaded with football items. I want to support local football teams in the rural parts of the country.”
Alieu continued: “I strongly believe in nurturing and promoting Gambian talent. Sports is one of the few areas where young Gambians from humble backgrounds can make a name for themselves. With little support, they can achieve their dreams.”
The foundation, named after the footballer, was established a few weeks ago with the main aim of boosting grassroots football in The Gambia.
“Nawettan football is suffering badly. There are new teams folding every day, but majority of them are finding it very difficult to run,” said Sweden-based footballer.
The foundation, which is expected to be officially launched soon, will also work with regional football organisations to help where they can.
