No question: Baba Jaa is a fan of Fatou Jaw Manneh (FJM).
He is not a member of the “Diaspora struggle”, but that didn’t stop the famous comedian from praising one of its most respected women during a recent live Facebook chat with his fans.
According to Baba Ja, FJM is the only nyancho left in the country.
Courageous, powerful and admirable were among the compliments paid to the US-based activist, who runs an online platform that promotes the equal participation of women and men in Gambian politics.
He recognized FJM as a woman who loves her country. Baba Ja said the nyancho wasn’t afraid to visit The Gambia in March 2007 despite receiving a tip off of an imminent arrest.
FJM is the first and only US-based female political activist to be ever arrested and charged in The Gambia for her writings critical of the government. She was convicted and sentenced to four years of hard labor or a fine of $12,000, but managed to pay the fine and returned to the US.
Last year, she was named among the most influential Gambian women by What’s On-Gambia.
