Celebrity support did not help Jammeh’s re-election bid

From Jatou Mbowe to Haddy Faye, President Jammeh had the most supporters in the Gambian celebrity world. But did they vote for him last week?

Adama Barrow was named the winner of the presidential election, winning in almost all the constituencies in the Greater Banjul Area.

The celebrities that supported him are light weights when it comes to the number of people that follow them on social media. Among them is former rapper, Bankie Grey Johnson.

Jammeh, on the other hand, had the most famous young men and women firmly behind him. Some of them openly campaigned for his re-election despite receiving insults from some of their fans.

His most fervent supporters included former club DJ, Jatou Mbowe. On the election eve, she posted a photo of the Gambian leader encouraging her fans to vote for him.

Haddy Faye, one of the wealthiest young businesswomen in the country, covertly campaigned for Jammeh. But it seems she has now jumped ship following Barrow’s victory.

Hellen Maroun, Yaw Conateh, Bai Babou, Nyancho, Cyco, Champion DJ Lamin Cham and Cess Ngum all wanted Jammeh to continue as president for the next five years.
