If there’s anyone who doesn’t want the ongoing political tensions in the country to end soon, it’s Fatou Camara.
Her online radio, Fatu Radio, is enjoying a huge audience boost as listeners tune in for updates on the arrest and prosecution of opposition politicians, including the leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Lawyer Darboe.
The former presidential press secretary’s morning talk show, The Today Show, which typically has a very small number of listeners, attracted hundreds of listeners in the past two weeks.
According to a political commentator, Fatou succeeded in dominating listener attention because of the local media’s failure to keep their coverage of the political tensions rolling.
“People have no choice; they have to either rush to Fatu Radio or Freedom Newspaper for updates. The government’s reluctance to comment on the ongoing tensions will continue to benefit the online radios,” he said.
Fatou’s Facebook page, which she opened in 2008, also saw an increase in the number of followers. The videos from the opposition protests together generated more than 150,000 views on the social networking site.
However, the former presidential press secretary, who was sacked in 2013 and fled to the USA after being charged with sedition, was criticized over her exaggeration of the political tensions.
