First annual Gambia Cultural Festival gets new dates

The first annual Gambia Cultural Festival (GCF) has been postponed until next month. It joins the growing list of events and festivities that have been cancelled or rescheduled as a result of the ongoing political crisis in the country which seems to be reaching a frightening crescendo as Jammeh refuses to step down.

The festival, due to start nine days from now, will now be held next month. In an interview with What’s On-Gambia, the coordinator, Waka J said: “We postponed it because of the elections. We don’t want to rush it. The amount of work needed to organise a massive event of this nature and to get it exactly the way we want it, needs time. My partners and sponsors were also busy because of the elections and we decided is better to move it forward. It is now from the 13th -15th January.”

According to Waka, Gambians and non-Gambians planning to attend the Gambia Cultural Festival, can still look forward to many of the events originally slated, including Goudi Chossan (Cultural Night), football tournament, pool party, Rep Your Area and Carnival Explosion.

The main purpose of the festival is to bring people together and promote the diverse cultures in and of The Gambia.

There will also be live performances from some of the country’s top musicians.

“It's going to one its kind and the first time for such a type of a festival to happen in The Gambia. As you can see with the planned events, we’re catering for every one and we are also showcasing the Gambian culture. Excitement is guaranteed.  The carnival is a family fun day.”

Food and drinks will be available during the 3-day event that is expected to be attended by senior government officials.
