President Adama Barrow abruptly fired Interior Minister Mai Ahmad Fatty last week, in a move that has left more questions than answers.

Mai was among the political leaders who formed the opposition coalition that ended former President Jammeh’s 22-year-old rule.  He is the first minister to be sacked by Barrow.

Here are three things that happened shortly after he was sent packing.

Darboe and Fatoumatta Tambajang tried to intervene

A reliable source revealed to What’s On-Gambia that the president sacked Mai Fatty without informing his cabinet. Shortly after Foreign Affairs Minister Ousainou Darboe and Vice President Fatoumatta Tambajang got the news, they tried to convince Barrow to rethink his decision.

“Barrow refused to budge on his decision. After a marathon back and forth, they managed to convince him to redeploy Mai to Foreign Service. However, the president made it very clear to them that he doesn’t want to see Mai anywhere close to his office,” said our source.

Investigation launched

The Gambia Moral Congress leader is currently under investigations, according to our source. Mai allegedly had secret meetings with multimillionaire businessman Muhammed Bazzi who is trying to escape prosecution after the Commission of Inquiry.

But in a press release, the Ministry of Justice vehemently denied launching an investigation into the activities of the former minister.

The revival of GMC

After confirming that the president was not going to rescind his sacking, Mai desperately tried to mobilize some of his surrogates to revive his party that was dormant for many years.
