I’m with Gambians! Ambassador Faye becomes first senior civil servant to abandon Jammeh

The Gambia’s Ambassador to the United States of America has become the first senior civil servant to abandon President Jammeh, urging him to step down.

Ambassador Sheikh Omar Faye said he could not, and would not, support his boss in disregarding the will of the people.

President Jammeh is under pressure to respect the outcome of the December 1 presidential election that saw him defeated by opposition leader, Adama Barrow. He initially conceded defeat, only to turn around and completely reject the election results.

"I recommend fresh and transparent elections which will be officiated by a God-fearing and independent electoral commission,” said Jammeh.

Ambassador Faye informed Gambians of his decision to flee Jammeh’s sinking ship in an open letter that was widely circulated online on Tuesday morning.

He wrote:  “I have always pushed for the interest of our people and vehemently stayed on course to help build a solid and healthy bilateral relationship between The Gambia and The United States. As the Ambassador of the Republic of The Gambia to the United States of America, I respectfully ask His Excellency President Jammeh to accept the will of Gambians and hand over the presidency to President-Elect Adama Barrow as stipulated in the Gambian Constitution.”

The famous ambassador said he finds it morally difficult to remain silent while Gambians are in fear and uncertainty.

“I am supporting the people of The Gambia by recognising Mr. Adama Barrow as the president-elect of The Gambia out of my personal decision and desire to protect and safeguard the peace and social cohesion of our beloved country.”

Sheikh Omar Faye is widely considered to be one of Jammeh’s most trusted men.
