Wonders shall never end: Why former State House insider, Nathalie Gomez apologised to Gambians

Former State House insider, Nathalie Gomez, has issued an apology to Gambians, after being accused of fighting against change in The Gambia.

Together with her mother, Tina Faal, they have been criticised for turning their backs on the opposition coalition led by UDP’s Adama Barrow to join the Gambia Democratic Party (GDC).

Her apology, posted on her Instagram page, has generated massive discussion online, with some asking why she felt compelled to do so.

She wrote: “I'm in full support of the coalition because at the end we all want change. Once again, I’m deeply sorry and apologising to every Gambian. I can't even type properly…as I'm talking my eyes are filled with tears.”

Nathalie’s family benefitted significantly from the outgoing government. She was allegedly very close to Jammeh and used her influence to secure jobs for her family members.

Her father was once the country’s minister of Justice, while her mum was nominated without merit in 2007 to sit in the National Assembly.

Nathalie’s family fell out with the Gambian leader following the sentencing of her sister, Georgina Gomez, the ex-welfare officer at the Gambian Embassy in London. She was sentenced by a British court in 2014 to serve five years in prison for her role in a tobacco scam.

Georgina made millions of dalasi from the scam and most of it was allegedly used to fund the family’s luxury lifestyle. They own houses in almost all the posh areas in the country.

In an interview with Freedom Newspaper, Nathalie’s mother accused the government of doing nothing to rescue Georgina from the jaws of the British judiciary.

Some of the family’s critics said they are supremely selfish and their hands are soiled with the sweat of Gambian taxpayers.

“I have been bombarded for years and years with negativity. It is true that I have been privileged to work at the Office of the President, but I guess who ever works there gets categorized. So many negative critics have been directed to me. Every nasty statement has been said. Speculation upon speculation,” said Nathalie.

According to the pretty Manjago-Narr beauty, who dated some of the most famous men in the country, her family is “under pressure”.
