In memory of Musa Ngum: Why do Gambians easily forget their fallen heroes?

Have we forgotten too soon or that is just how The Gambia remembers its departed heroes?

October 12 marked the second anniversary since the demise of legendary musician Musa Ngum, but to the dismay of many, not a single event was organised in his honour.

Musa Ngum was undoubtedly one of The Gambia’s biggest music exports. He died in Dakar last year aged shortly after a performance at a famous night venue in the Senegalese Capital. He was with his son Yusupha Ngum, and famous photographer, Alhagie Manka who was the first to break the news on social.

His burial in Touba was attended by dignitaries from both The Gambia and Senegal and they all promised to keep his memory and legacy alive.

One year on, it seems both countries that Musa Ngum fought so hard to keep united have completely forgotten about him.

There was no statement whatsoever from the new government under the leadership of Adama Barrow reminding Gambians about the Banjul Banjul hit maker and his accomplishments during his music career.

However, some of his diehard fans took to Facebook to pay emotional tributes to the late legend.

One Sulayman Njie wrote:“Gone but not forgotten. Your songs shall always remain lessons to us. Rest in peace.”

Cheikh Danfa added: “Big bro "MUSA" although you're physically gone, but mentally and spiritually you're here with many of us. Stay in perfect peace.”
