Marathon runner, Saikou Barrow making a name in Switzerland

A Sukuta boy, Saikou Barrow, is making a name for himself in marathon running.

The 24-year-old, who never ran a marathon in The Gambia, is now a respected runner in Bern, Switzerland, with a lot of medals under his belt.

“I moved to Europe in 2008 and was living in Spain with my uncle. It was there I started my athletic career. I later moved to Switzerland where I now live with my girlfriend,” he told What’s On-Gambia.

One of Saikou’s most recent races was on the 28th June, and according to him, he came out first. It was a 10km race and he was able to cover it in 30minutes and 28seconds – faster than the old record.

When asked if his family back home is supportive of his new career, Saikou said: “They’re very happy. They’re giving me all the support.”

The Sukutarian said he wants to take part in the Olympics but has not yet decided whether to represent his home country or Switzerland.

“I want to break a world record. I am training almost every day. If you want to win, you have to work hard.”

Saikou’s advice to young Gambians is: “Believe in yourselves!”
