Mariama Samateh wants to help Libya returnees

A US-based Gambian, Mariama Samateh has launched a fundraising campaign dedicated to Gambian returnees from Libya.

Within a matter of days, the initiative has successfully secured more than 2000 dollars online.

According to Mariama, she wants to use the money to help the returnees with psychological support, which is very difficult to access in The Gambia.

“The kids are coming and they are having a lot of emotional disturbances. They are having a lot of emotional issues because of the trauma they went through,” she said in a live Facebook video.

Mariama disclosed she is already in touch with The Gambia’s medical health sector.

Hundreds of young Gambians in Libya have returned home following reports that African migrants are being sold into slavery.

Amadou Badjie, a returnee, told The Point: “Libya is a hell place for Africans or any black person, you work 24-7, and you only eat once a loaf of bread and drink a cup of water.”

“Libyans are cruel,” he said.
