Polygamy appears to be gaining popularity among some young women in The Gambia, with an increasing number openly embracing the role of second wives. Even women who are highly educated and financially independent are entering polygamous marriages.
A few years ago, before the rise of TikTok and other social media platforms, many young women showed little interest in polygamous unions. However, attitudes seem to have shifted in recent times, with some women now proudly sharing their experiences of becoming second wives online.
What is driving this change in marital choices among women in The Gambia?
In an interview, a women’s rights activist suggested that some women, particularly those approaching menopause, may feel a stronger desire to marry and have children, making them more willing to become a second, third, or fourth wife.
She added that women’s views on polygamous marriage are varied and often influenced by personal, cultural, and economic circumstances.
Another gender activist said some women choose such unions willingly, motivated by love, the pursuit of social status, financial security, or protection. Others, however, may be pushed into polygamous arrangements due to family pressure, societal expectations, or a lack of alternatives.
