Gambians have taken to Facebook to thank the people of Zinguinchor in Casamance for honouring legendary musician, Musa Ngum by naming a street after him.

The late singer was the most popular Gambian musician in neighbouring Senegal, where he died in 2015 shortly after a thrilling performance at the Just 4 You nightclub in Dakar.

Now – three years after his death at the age of 62- the municipal authourities in Zinguinchor have named a street after him.

One of The Gambia’s finest young writers, Cany Jobe wrote on Facebook: “See our life? Others celebrate OUR heroes for us.”

One Kebba Ceesay also said: “Nooo Senegal rek kai dem... See when I say Gambians don’t celebrate success and our heroes/heroines.  A foreign country will bless our own people when we refused to celebrate them. It is very sad indeed. Congrats to the Ngum family and a massive thank you to all the Senegalese and the community of Ziguinchor.”

Another Facebook user, Haddy Njie wrote: “This is very embarrassing. Like I said before we never value ourselves. Thanks Senegal as a whole, especially the city of Ziguinchor. May his gentle soul continue to Rest in Peace.”

One Tijaan Kamara commented: “Good act of honour. Since we don't honour our legends; they, who know his worth will do with pride of ownership. Reww mee! Chei Gambia.”

Born in Kantora in the Upper River Region, Musa was buried in Touba, Senegal. Some of the prominent people that attended his funeral include superstar, Youssou Ndour.
