The people of The Gambia will on the 19th December, 2015 vote on whether they want to become Britain’s only overseas territory in Africa.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Neneh MacDouall-Gaye on Monday outlined who can vote in what is expected to be the country’s most important referendum in history.
Hon. MacDouall-Gaye told What’s On-Gambia that the 19th December vote will only be open to Gambians who are permanently living in the country.
Political pundits think the referendum will return with an overwhelming Yes-vote. Lamin Jadama, a lecturer at the Gambia College said: “I don’t think there is any Gambian who doesn’t want to be a British citizen. In fact, the referendum is not necessary.”
If Gambians vote Yes, they would immediately become British citizens with the right to live in the United Kingdom.
The British government, according to a source, is preparing to train over 500 immigration officers to deal with passport and nationality questions.
A member of the UKip party that spoke to our London-based reporter said his party will do everything possible to block the referendum.
“More than one million Gambians could become British citizens, if we allow this voting to happen. Come on, they will all move here to the United Kingdom. David Cameroun is a joke!”
Already some politicians are campaigning to become The Gambia’s First Minister.
The question now is – what is going to happen to the APRC government?
