A Dutch couple living in the coastal village of Tanji has been left terrified and penniless after heartless thieves ransacked their home.
Andrea was away in Dakar, Senegal, dutifully attending to her husband, Ralf, when thieves broke into their home. The incident happened March 2.
Speaking to What’s On-Gambia, Andrea said: “I just came back from Dakar, where my husband was admitted. He had some health issues that cost him his leg and now, he is in the Netherlands to recover. Upon my return to Tanji, I noticed they broke into our house and stole all our money.”
Andrea and Ralf first visited The Gambia in 2005, and in 2010, they decided to settle in Tanji. But with this incident, she’s now thinking twice about The Gambia.
“I am very disappointed,” she said.
“I always told everybody that The Gambia is safe. Now, I don’t know what to do anymore. I lose my trust in all the people around me. Someone close to us and familiar with our home must be behind it.”
For now though, she is left terrified in an environment that used to be her safe haven.
“My husband is not with me right now and my living expenses stolen,” she decried. “I am very sad and disappointed.
“I am afraid to go to sleep. I have to hire a watchman and I cannot afford that because they took away all my money. How can anybody do this? Normally, I am a strong woman, but the thing that happened to us now broke me down.”
