TRRC denies giving dollars to alleged victims

The Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) has denied rumours that they are dishing out hundreds of thousands of dollars to alleged victims of the former government.

"It's not true. There's transport refund to victims who come to give statements and that's not in dollars. No one has received any reparations from the TRRC. All that is being done is to help victims who have medical needs because that can't wait," said the Commission's communication specialist, Essa Jallow.

He further disclosed to What's On-Gambia that some of the medical bills are taken care of by their partners.

Rumours that emerged a few days ago claimed that the TRRC has started paying reparations to victims of alleged human rights violations during former president Yahya Jammeh's 22-year-old rule.

"They are paying them in Dollars and this why many want to appear before the Commission to lie against Jammeh," claimed an APRC supporter in a Facebook video.

However, Essa said: "Money received by victims were raised by individuals, not the TRRC."

The Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission, which is supported by international organisations, is expected to pay reparations to hundreds of people identified as victims of the former government.
