The Scorpions have pledged to do everything they can to make history at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon, as anticipation builds across the country ahead of their first match against Mauritania.
This is the national team’s first appearance in any major international tournament, ever, and for the fans, it’s the culmination of decades of hopes and expectations.
"Everyone is working hard, We are looking forward to playing our first ever game in the AFCON," said Steve Trawally, one of the most famous players among Gambian football enthusiasts.
He added: "We are not here just to show face. We are here to compete with all these big nations that were here before us. There is always a first time, but it doesn't mean you just have to come and look down on yourself. We are ready like we were in the qualifier."
Steve said the team hopes to do the nation proud when they take to the pitch later today at the Limbe Omnisport Stadium.
