Why Gambians don’t feel OK using toilet paper? UK-based TV presenter, Ida Cham explains

It’s a mystery for many Europeans regarding why Gambians don’t feel comfortable using toilet papers and instead clean with water using their hands.

In an appearance on the TV show, Posh D, showed recently on Smiling Coast TV, Ida Njie said in many Gambian homes children are encouraged to use water to wash after using the toilet.

The UK-based TV presenter added that even Gambians living in the Diaspora find it difficult to adjust to the toilet paper system.

She disclosed: “Every time I go to the toilet even at work, I always wet my tissue. I can’t use a dry tissue, I cannot. May be because of the way I was brought up.”

Ida added that at work, some of her colleagues are always curious about her toilet etiquette.

“Islam teaches you cleanliness. You can’t be dirty and praying or getting in a mosque,” she said.

Gambians, like Muslims in other parts of the world, prefer to use water instead of toilet paper. It is considered a cleaner practice.
