The Gambia Bird as reported last week has suspended commercial flight operations until further notice.
Information reaching What’s On-Gambia revealed that the company’s Gambian cabin crew members are now without jobs. They were served with termination letters on January 4th.
The affected employees of around 12 have threatened to file a law-suit against Gambia Bird. An insider said: “When ending a business you have certain obligations towards your staff. The company failed to appropriately communicate their plans to them.”
Reports indicated the flight company was seriously hit by the Ebola outbreak after being forced to retreat from operations in Ebola-affected countries like Sierra Leone and Liberia.
The cabin crew members are arguing that Gambia Bird brought their contracts to an end without following the required procedures.
A lawyer told What’s On-Gambia: “It is important for an employer to be clear. Employees are entitled to be aware of their plans to start looking for new employment options.”
According to the insider, cabin crew members were receiving close to D15, 000 after tax. Their contract with Gambia Bird was supposed to end in March 2015.
“They want the company to pay them their January, February and March salaries and also all other entitlements. I think each of them is asking for more than D150, 000 and I don’t think Gambia Bird will agree,” he said.
The insider continued: “But the problem is the staff is not united. Some of them are saying if they take the company to court they will not help them with recommendation letters. It is very sad that foreigners come to The Gambia and handle us any how they want.”
Gambia Bird started operations in October 2012. It is run by Germania Airlines which is based in Berlin, Germany.
