Speculation is growing across The Gambia as the country awaits the possible return of former president Yahya Jammeh, who has spent more than eight years in exile.
The frenzy began last month when Jammeh, speaking via WhatsApp during a rally in his home village of Kanilai, announced that he would return to The Gambia in November. He urged his supporters to prepare for his homecoming, prompting a wave of activity among APRC loyalists. Some supporters were reportedly arrested by the Bundung Police after hanging APRC flags on traffic light poles as part of the preparations.
However, President Adama Barrow has dismissed Jammeh’s announcement as empty talk. Barrow insisted that Jammeh cannot return without his approval and accused the former president of misleading his followers with false hopes.
With Friday fast approaching, the nation is waiting to see whether Jammeh will indeed arrive at Banjul International Airport. A no-show could weaken his standing among the Gambians who continue to revere him.
Jammeh is believed to be seeking a revival of his political influence and aims to reclaim control of the APRC, which was “hijacked” by Fabakary Tombong Jatta, Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay, and others.
