A Bakau girl, Jainaba Bojang, is suing her ex-husband, David Tungate for libel on the grounds that he leaked private photos of her to a British newspaper in a manner damaging to her reputation.
David, a regular visitor to The Gambia, was recently arraigned at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded not guilty. He was granted bail to the tune of D100, 000 with two Gambian sureties who must deposit their ID card.
Jainaba’s libel claim is possibly the first in The Gambia from a woman claiming her European partner damaged her reputation.
David disclosed to journalists in England that she met Jainaba in 2007 in a café, where she was working as a waitress. They had a whirlwind romance before getting married a few years later.
The couple separated last year amid explosive claims of infidelity. David alleged that Jainaba was a bigamist that was secretly married to two other men.
“Love is blind. Our whole relationship was a lie …I should have seen the signs, but I was a fool,” he said.
The former van driver revealed to the British media that he spent more than D100, 000 to help his ex-wife start a fashion shop. He was also providing her with a monthly allowance.
Libel and defamation charges in The Gambia carry fines or relatively short jail times.
What’s On-Gambiawas mentioned on the charge sheet filed by the prosecutor. The online magazine shared the story on its Facebook page where it generated a lot of comments against Jainaba.
