A Belgian man recently reached out to What's On-Gambia to share how his relationship with his Gambian wife turned into a nightmare.
The man revealed that he met his wife through a trusted taxi driver he had known for years. "At first, I wasn’t looking for love," he said. "But after deciding to set up a business in The Gambia, I reconsidered, and we started dating in October 2023."
As the relationship progressed, he said he bought her a car valued at D90,000. When he suggested that they move in together, she declined, insisting they marry first. She proposed a traditional wedding, and on January 15, 2024, they tied the knot.
Despite a seemingly happy start, cracks began to show. According to the man, his wife stole from him on multiple occasions, but he forgave her out of love. By April 2024, tensions peaked, and the couple discussed separation. His wife reportedly requested he write a divorce letter to her parents.
"I didn’t write the letter because I quickly realized I missed her and wanted to reconcile," he explained. "We decided to officially register our marriage and were planning a wedding celebration for January 2025."
He went on to say that he made significant life changes for her, including arranging to reverse his vasectomy so they could have children. He also lavished her with gifts, purchased new furniture, and took her on vacations to Senegal and Cape Verde.
However, the marriage took another dramatic turn in July when he traveled to Europe. In late August, while he was still away, his wife informed him she had left their shared apartment.
Upon his return to The Gambia on September 1, the Belgian man found the apartment ransacked—furniture, electronics, personal belongings, and sentimental items from his life in Europe were all gone.
Devastated, the man reported the incident to the police. His wife, however, accused him of attempting to hire people to kill her while they were in Cape Verde —an allegation he vehemently denied.
