Gambians clash over ownership of land by toubabs

Should a toubab be allowed to buy and sell land in The Gambia?

This was a question that caused a storm on the What's On-Gambia Facebook Page after one Khadija Baldeh in the USA raised objection to the ownership of real estate companies by Europeans.

"Why are Europeans allowed to own and sell land in The Gambia, no wonder average Gambians can't afford to buy land in a good place, I think this is evil, if you are not a Gambian, you should not be able to sell land."

Khadija was responding to a story about former model Fana Camara, in which it was disclosed that her husband, a Dutch national, is the owner of Galaxy Properties.

According to Khadija, land distribution should be placed solely in the hands of Gambians.

Her controversial comments, unsurprisingly, set off many What's On-Gambia followers. One Alieu Marr in the United Kingdom commented: "That's the most dumb thing I've read on here! We live in a free world."

Abdou Rahman Jawara, an online political activist in the USA quipped in: "To make anything affordable is up to the government.”

Khadija defended herself by noting "Gambia is such a small country if we allow Europeans to come and buy land and sell it I have an issue with that."
