Jammeh should never be forgiven, says Sarjo Barrow

Veteran journalist, Sarjo Barrow has called for former president Yahya Jammeh to be hauled before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague over crimes he committed during his 22 year rule.

Barrow, one of the country’s most famous broadcasters, accused the former president of “destroying The Gambia.”

He told What’s On-Gambia: “Jammeh should never be forgiven. He should be taken to the ICC like they did to Charles Taylor and Laurent Gbagbo.”

The veteran journalist accused the former president of promoting hate, demonization and division when he was in State House.

“He tribalised the army and other security outfits. Even the civil service was tribalised.”

Asked why he never spoke out against Jammeh during his presidency, Barrow said: “I was angry. Very angry.  That was why I decided to keep quiet.

“I never liked Jammeh. I never voted for him since the formation of his political party. If you ask my colleagues at GRTS, they would tell you that I always avoided attending his programs. He was very immature.”

The Brusubi-based journalist also rubbished rumours that he is a member of the United Democratic Party (UDP) saying: “I have never been a member of a political party since Jawara’s era. You will not find my name in any party’s record. I want to remain as an independent citizen.”

Sarjo Barrow started his career in May 1979 as a temporary announcer at Radio Gambia. He rose through the ranks to become Manager of Radio Programs.
