Jaha Dukureh has got nerves. The young Gambian scored a rare feat when she rallied White House and UN House to back her anti-FGM campaign, but she is now risking the wrath of the powers that back her.
She has spoken out against the conferring of ESPN’s Courage Award to Bruce Jenner, now Caitlyn, who will receive the prize next month in Los Angeles.
The award is given to people who possess strength in the face of adversity, courage in the face of peril, and the willingness to stand up for their beliefs no matter the cost.
And, the former US Olympian is awarded for his boldness when he recently came out as transgender. He made the revelation during a special appearance on ABC TV.
Jaha, who is famous for her fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), has spoken against ESPN’s decision to give Bruce the prestigious Arthur Ashe Award.
According to Jaha, Kim Kardashian’s step dad has done nothing heroic in changing his gender. She said it’s a saga that is ‘very perplexing.’
“It’s really crazy!” she added.
The founder of Safe Hands for Girls was responding to a Facebook post by socialite girl, Oumie Fofana, who also condemned Bruce’s sex change.
Jaha’s comment is likely to bother her sponsors and supporters in the USA, as the Obama administration frowns upon stigmatization of people for their sexual orientation. In early 2015, the famous FGM campaigner met with the UN Secretary General, Banki Moon to share her story as an FGM survivor.
