The Bundung High Court judge, who's presiding over Bob Keita's rape trial, is widely believed to be the laziest judge in Gambian history. He has a huge pile of pending cases ranging from minor crimes to more serious ones like armed robbery and rape.
Justice Momodou S. M. Jallow, a former "UK semester", became a high court judge in April 2020 after serving nine years as a magistrate. He bagged his law degree from the University of The Gambia (UTG).
A source close to him disclosed to What's On-Gambia: "He was among the first badge of Law students at the UTG. His former classmates include Justice Minister Dawda Jallow and former minister Edward Signhateh."
The Bundung High Court judge was virtually unknown to many Gambians until he was assigned by the Chief Justice to preside over Bob Keita's rape trial, which has been dragging on for over two years now. Hearings were adjourned and rescheduled over 30 times, sometimes for very flimsy reasons.
According to one of his former clerks, Justice Jallow is famous for adjourning cases out of laziness, and sometimes he would even encourage lawyers and prosecutors to seek adjournments.
"Such a mindset should not be accepted in our judiciary when scores of litigants are longing for justice," said the clerk.
Justice Jallow is also said to be a judge who has no regard for ethical standards. He's the first judge since independence to be dragged to court for violating a Gambian citizen's constitutional right to a fair hearing.
