The Gambia has been listed among the African countries with the lowest average IQ, ranking ahead of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Cape Verde.
IQ, or Intelligence Quotient, is a composite score derived from a series of standardized tests designed to evaluate human intelligence.
Although IQ scores are used to estimate intelligence, they are influenced by various factors such as nutrition, socioeconomic conditions, and environment. These scores are often applied in contexts like educational placement, assessing intellectual abilities, and evaluating job candidates.
According to a report published by Business Insider Africa, The Gambia ranked as the fourth-lowest country in terms of average IQ, with a score of 52.68. The three countries with lower scores are Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Cape Verde.
However, some scholars argue that IQ scores are not a definitive measure of intelligence. They claim that these tests reflect a narrow numerical outcome based on assessments created by Western Europeans and tailored to Western cultural standards and contexts.
